When I first came across this fascinating tektite I thought it was such a bizarre name because it came from Tasmania and not Darwin!! But it turns out that Darwin Glass does in fact get it's name after the locality in which it is first found. Mount Darwin has an elevation of 1,033 meters above sea level, the mountain is situated on the West Coast Range. On the eastern side of the mountain is Darwin, a long-abandoned town site. Mount Darwin is the southernmost mountain of the West Coast range. This is the locality of where a meteorite struck Tasmania and vaporised rocks and soil, some 750,000 years ago.
