Pyrite Sun 01

As I sat in the dentist flipping through a National Geographic magazine featuring Tutankhamen and the boy kings treasures, I couldn't help but draw parallels between the ancient artworks depicting sun disks and the God, Ra and Pyrite Suns! There is something truly regal and powerful about these phenomenal pieces! Perhaps this is why I associated Ra with these specimens. In ancient Egypt, Ra was the king of the deities and the father of all creation. He was not only the deity who governed the actions of the sun, he could also be the physical sun itself. The disk-shaped mineralisation pattern of the pyrite suns occurs due the weight of overlying sediment making it easier for crystals to grow laterally in a radiating manner resulting in the growth of flat concretions of pyrite.
